Rohtang Pass in Manali has been thrown open for traffic for the season 2012. With the opening of Rohtang pass long ques of cars and taxis to reach the pass have started again this year. The road is still laden with snow leaving very few places for giving way to the vehicles coming from the other side.
Situated at a height of 13,050 altitude and 52 km from Manali the pass remains closed for 6 months from December onwards. Rohtang Pass is the gateway to Lahul and Spiti valley and also the first pass while traveling from Manali to Leh. As of now the road to Spiti valley is closed from Manali side as Kunzum Pass is yet to be opened.
Traveling to Rohtang Pass in initial days will be a problem due to day long traffic jams on this stretch. Previous year due to unmanageable traffic, the local administration on the orders of the court had banned vehicles not registered in Himachal Pradesh to travel on the Manali – Rohtang Pass stretch.
While visiting Rohtang pass, leave early morning around 4-5 am so that you can reach the pass comfortably. It will only while coming back that you may face massive traffic jams.
As usual the Rohtang Pass will remained closed on every Tuesday of the week for maintenance of the road and non Himachal registered vehicles both private cars or taxis will not be allowed to move from Kothi onwards to Rohtang Pass.
