Following massive landslides and flash floods in Kinnaur region in the month of June 2013, road connectivity to Sangla and Kaza in Himachal Pradesh remains disrupted. Road links still not has been restored properly in Kinnaur district. Though road connectivity was restored till Kalpa earlier, majority of the district is still cut from district headquarters Kalpa and National Highway 22.
As of Sunday, August 25, 2013 road connectivity to Sangla still remains snapped. The road is still laden with boulders and landslide has happened again on the road. This year due to non functioning of road facility entire apple crop from Sangla valley could not be transported.
Towards Kaza, the National Highway 22 is open till Malling Nallah. There is no road beyond Malling as of now and Kaza cannot be reached from Shimla side. Presently only way to reach Kaza is from Manali side via Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass.
Though road link has been restored till Malling but the road condition remains very bad in the entire district. Presently the government and army’s priority is to connect the National Highway with China border.
For tourists traveling to Kinnaur and Kaza the news is not very encouraging till next year. It will take some time to restore roads to the area. Road to Sangla will take time to stabilize as boulders keep coming down. Kalpa the road is open as of now but reaching Kalpa remains a problem due to bad condition of roads.
Probably by next year April, roads will be fully resotored to Sangla and Kaza and it will be safe to travel to the area.
