Manali Leh highway has finally opened for traffic for the year 2011. According to IANS press report, the 475 km long Himalayan highway was opened for traffic on June 1, 2011 for light vehicles.
A.K. Dikshit, commander of the 38 Task Force of the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) has been quoted in the story saying, some of the areas along the Rohtang Pass, some 52 km from Manali, are still under 45-50 feet snow. Normally, these areas experience 15-20 feet of snow. As per our records, last winter saw the heaviest snowfall in the past 30 years. He said some stretches of the highway pass through a wall of snow as high as 30 feet.
Manali to Leh distance of 475 km is covered over a period of two days. This important road, which was once part of the ancient trade route between India and Central Asia, wends its way through breathtaking mountain views. The Manali to Leh road passes through 5 high mountain passes namely, Rohtang-La (Pass), Baralacha-La, Lachung-La, Naki-La and Tanglang-La.
